Bogor Meeting Supports MMTA Plan For Mentawai PDF Print E-mail

The Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (MENKOPOLHUKAM) and the Ministry for Ocean Affairs & Fisheries Director General of PPSKP hosted a top level meeting in Bogor with participants from 28 Ministries, Departments and other organization to discuss the supervision and enforcement of law to promote the utilization of small islands in Indonesia.

This meeting focus on problems in Mentawai Islands including attempted sale of one small island by a French national,  the operation of unlicensed seasonal boats, and many dificulties faced by the Mentawai administration enforcing tourism legislation. Bp Un called on all related authorities to investigate these problems and to support implementation of PERDA No. 16, 2002 Kab. Kep. Mentawai. The role of MMTA was explain to the meeting as key organization to support the development of Mentawai Island communities by regulated tourism. Bp Un asked the participant to support law enforcement to improve the investment climate for resorts on land because of the serious challenge in this remote area and heavy overhead faced by the licensed marine tour operator to invest in infrastructure and human resources.

 The meeting resolve to support the addoption of national guidelines for tourism legislation for all provinces and regencies on national ocean borders and to develop new legislation based on PERDA No. 16, 2002 Kab. Kep. Mentawai.
